hagler,

Personally, I don't like using a "string on a piece of a4 paper" because the paper tends to tear too much and there is too much sway. I use a light-weight chain with a spring clamp on the end. The sway is minimal and it has to rip around the clamp before it is destroyed. It still happens, but it takes longer.

As for trapping drills, you might look into the different spring arms available. I know the FocusMaster is expensive, but it has an attachment that will do this.

Also, I think that Lamar Davis sells a stand-alone spring arm. I'll try and get him on here to give you more information.

Thanks for posting!

Lamar,

Welcome to the forum! And thanks for posting the info on your products.

On the springarms, you would need to purchase both the springarm & one of the mounts? Is that correct?

Do you have any pictures you could post?

I saw some of the pics of your Mook Jong Dummy.

Definitely better than doing nothing!  Smiley

I know it's a challenge to come up with ways to train when you don't have a training partner, but the more you do it, the more creative you become.

Some other ideas...

  • Make or buy a "slip" bag. Something that can swing back & forth. Work on slipping side to side & back.
  • Do you have a heavy bag? Or even a smaller bag to practice your punching?
  • Top & Bottom bag? Traditional speed bag? These are also good pieces of equipment to have.
  • Jump rope. Work on being light on your feet. You can also work within your stance while jumping. (It will have to be a bit narrow, though.)
  • If you want a very cheap alternative to the spring arm, you could buy one of those "water noodles" and tape it to the wall or other piece of equipment. I wrapped one of those around a small punching bag and use a coat hanger to hold it in place. You can spin it around to bob & weave or simply use it as a way to slip in and work your body attacks.

These are just some things off the top of my head. Hope this at least gives you some more ideas.

No problem! Glad I could help.

One other suggestion... use a mirror.

I feel that a mirror is invaluable as a training aide. It can help correct a LOT of mistakes in technique and form.

Just don't get so caught up in it that you always watch yourself. That can cause problems, too. Just like most things in life, moderation is the key.

Hi Kip!

Thanks for the warm welcome!  Actually, the mook jong that you have shown above is no longer affiliated with me to any notable degree!  In fact, my webmaster was supposed to have already removed that link from my website.  I now have my own mook jongs that I build that come with springloaded arms and a heavy duty wooden leg (please see price list above).  As for the springarms, you can use them anywhere that you can bore a 1 1/8" hole 3" deep.  Just stick the pipe end of the arm in the hole and go to work!  If used properly (and if the hole is exactly 1 1/8" in diameter) the arm stays in place for use.  For ease of use and simplicity, someone may want to purchase one of the various mounts.  I am developing more equipment, which should be done by the time the DragonBlast website goes live.  All equipment is developed and geared for Jeet Kune Do use, but could be used by any martial arts style.
